You have been asked what is being done about AI.

You run the organisation or sit on its board. You need an answer you can stand behind, and you do not need to be an AI specialist to get one.

What you are likely being asked.

These are the three questions boards raise most often. Each has a plain answer.

How much AI are we using?

Usually far more than anyone expects. One organisation found 1,224 AI agents in its own systems, 109 of them with no owner.

Who is accountable for it?

Your organisation stays accountable for the AI it chose to run. The question is whether a named person sits against each use.

Could we show a regulator?

A policy says what people should do. Regulators increasingly expect you to show who approved a use of AI, and on what evidence.

Five things you should be able to show today.

In our experience, most organisations can produce two of them. If a regulator asked this afternoon, the distance between what you could produce and what should exist is the measure of where you stand.

  • A current count of AI agents and assistants in use.
  • A named owner for each one that is live.
  • A record of who approved each use, and on what basis.
  • What each agent can reach, and who it shares with.
  • What was required of the person who built it, before they were permitted to build.
